Warriors’ James Wiseman does contact drills for first time since injury
James Wiseman reached a major milestone in his rehab on Tuesday.
The Warriors big man participated in contact drills during practice in Salt Lake City, Utah for the first time since having meniscus surgery last April, according to multiple reports.
Wiseman participated in a 3-on-3 work, which was captured on video by Anthony Slater of The Athletic.
Wiseman has had a long and unpredictable recovery since going under the knife 10 months ago. After the Warriors initially showed some optimism about his return at the start of the season, Wiseman underwent second knee surgery in December to clean up swelling.
Coach Steve Kerr even said he would stop discussing when the No. 2 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft would return after such a roller coaster rehab process.
“There’s just no plan for it,” coach Steve Kerr told KNBR in late January. differently. We thought he would be back now. I feel so bad for James. He works every day. He keeps a very good positive spirit around him. But we want him so badly to start and take off his career. The poor guy is struggling with the injury, with the knee, and we just don’t know when he’s going to turn the corner.”
Participating in contact drills on Tuesday, it looks like Wiseman has finally hit that milestone in his rehab.
Assuming the sophomore center succeeds in his first contact job without any setbacks, Wiseman will continue to ramp up his rehab over the coming weeks. He should probably participate in several 5-on-5 scrimmages and potentially some G League games before returning to action with the Warriors.

Golden State (41-13) will continue to play without Wiseman as they take on the Utah Jazz (33-21) on Wednesday from Vivint Arena. Kerr told reporters in Utah that Klay Thompson won’t face the Jazz either, as he will rest the first night of a straight game.
