Star Trek: The Original Series – “Arena”
Would it be a day of first contact without revisiting Kirk’s epic fight against the Gorn? As the two captains fight, Kirk is able to make first contact with a race of aliens known as Metrons. While Kirk impresses them by showing mercy to his adversary, he is still deemed insufficient, and so the Metron send him and Captain Gorn back to their respective ships without offering to join the Federation or engage in any other form. of contact. As far as first contact goes, it was touch-and-go, but Kirk still showed the power of Starfleet’s belief in peace by saving the Gorn ship from destruction.
Star Trek: The Animated Series – “Well”
Commander Ari bn Bem of the planet Pandro has the dubious honor of being one of the most controversial characters to appear in the franchise. While deciding whether or not his advanced people will begin to open diplomatic negotiations with the Federation, Bem travels with the Business and gets into all sorts of mischief, even causing first contact with a new planet that goes awry. For fans who find Bem’s antics delightfully hilarious, another pandronian makes an appearance in Star Trek: Lower Decks‘ “I, Excretus” where she carries on Bem’s legacy of wreaking havoc.
Star Trek: The Next Generation – “First contact”
The official Starfleet definition of “making first contact” is making contact with a planet or species that is about to become warp-capable. Picard and the crew of the Business open negotiations with a near-warp planet when Riker, disguised as an alien, disappears. As Picard deftly navigates the situation with his usual diplomacy, we see how tricky the moment of first contact can be. While Malcor isn’t ultimately ready to join the Federation or fully develop his warp abilities, this episode shows exactly how positive first contact can turn out for all parties involved.
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine – “The Jem’Hadar”
Sisko, Quark, Jake, and Nog make initial contact with two of the main antagonists for the rest of Deep Space Ninein “The Jem’Hadar”, when all they wanted to do was go camping. Well, the Siskos and Nog wanted to camp, Quark was there for his own purposes. This episode introduced the Jem’Hadar and the Vorta, two types of soldiers working for the Dominion; both species would go on to fight the Federation and their allies during the Dominion War. In another important scene, Quark calls out the hypocrisy and savior tendencies of Starfleet, showing another first-contact perspective of a species that chose not to join the Federation.
Star Trek: Voyager – “Scorpio”
This episode was certainly not the Borg’s first contact with the Federation, but it was the first contact for a new star trek hero. In “Scorpion, Part Two”, the fourth season premiere, Janeway and her crew encountered the Borg drone Seven of Nine. Seven was eventually separated from the Collective and taken aboard Traveler, leading her to overcome her Borg implants to become… well, not more human, but to become more herself. Seven, whose story is told in both Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Picardhas become an iconic character in the franchise, and his first contact shows just how far his journey from drone to hero will go.
Star Trek: Enterprise – “The Andorian Incident”
The Andorians were a familiar species to star trek fans since their first appearance in Star Trek: The Original Series, but prequel Business showed how the Federation made contact with them for the first time. Archer and his crew are embroiled in a conflict between the Vulcans and their Andorian neighbors in this episode, marking the first time Starfleet has come into contact with the species. Shran, the episode’s main Andorian, was played by hiking mainstay of Jeffrey Combs and would appear several times throughout the series after ending the episode feeling indebted to Archer after the Captain saved his life.
Star Trek: Discovery – “That Hope Is You, Part 1” / “Far From Home”
Sometimes the first contact is not with a people but with a time. The crew of Discovery of the USS find themselves thrown into the 32nd century, where they discover a universe different from the one they left behind. The Federation has fractured, the Burn has devastated warp travel, and most people back then don’t have the friendliest faces. Still, Burnham and his crew are able to spark hope and find allies, even as they face a decidedly uncertain future.
Star Trek: Short Hikes – “Children of Mars”
The first contact is about connection, at its very core. It’s about extending the hand of friendship to someone new and facing the future together. Although “Children of Mars” might seem like an odd choice, given the tragedy of the story, we included it in the list for two reasons. The first is that it takes place on the day of first contact. The second is that Kima and Lil’s story is about reaching out for friendship in dark times. The two girls are at odds with each other, but as they face a terrifying new future, they still hold each other tight. It really encompasses what matters in the concept of first contact.
Star Trek: Picard – “And in Arcadia Ego, Parts 1 and 2”
Picard gets the chance to make first contact again in the season one finale of Star Trek: Picard. As the planet synth faces destruction from the Romulans, Picard is able to save the day with a little help from his former number one, Will Riker. Picard ultimately gives his life in the process, though he is resurrected through a synthetic golem. Once again, Picard’s diplomacy and his will to keep peace and preserve life allow a successful first contact.
Star Trek: Lower Decks – “Terminal provocations”
the USS Cerritos often fails to make all the first contact; typically, the ship is sent on a second contact mission. However, Ensign Rutherford created his own first with Badgey, a Starfleet badge-shaped holographic tutor. However, Badgey develops a rather evil mind of his own and turns against his creator, who ultimately destroys this version of Badgey and resets him, hoping he won’t remember his murderous side. However, Badgey continued to seek revenge. This charming and wicked character has become beloved by the fanbase – and really, a bubbly, evil Starfleet badge? What’s not to like?
Star Trek: Prodigy – “First contact”
The motley group of children piloting the USS Protostar They’re not Starfleet cadets, and they don’t know what first contact is or what it represents. However, when a first contact goes awry thanks to Dal’s manipulative Ferengi mentor, the crew uses all their skills and wits to make things right. Even so, Janeway notes that the species they encountered will now be wary of approaching ships. This episode highlighted the importance of a smooth first contact and brilliantly introduced the concept to young audiences watching. star trek for the first time. A first contact indeed!
