Would it be a day of first contact without revisiting Kirk’s epic fight against the Gorn? As the two captains fight, Kirk is able to make first contact with a race of aliens known as Metrons. While Kirk impresses them by showing mercy to his adversary, he is still deemed insufficient, and so the Metron send him and Captain Gorn back to their respective ships without offering to join the Federation or engage in any other form. of contact. Picard and the crew of the Business open negotiations with a near-warp planet when Riker, disguised as an alien, disappears. As Picard deftly navigates the situation with his usual diplomacy, we see how tricky the moment of first contact can be. While Malcor isn’t ultimately ready to join the Federation or fully develop his warp abilities, this episode shows exactly how positive first contact can turn out for all parties involved.

Sisko, Quark, Jake, and Nog make initial contact with two of the main antagonists for the rest of Deep Space Ninein “The Jem’Hadar”, when all they wanted to do was go camping. Well, the Siskos and Nog wanted to camp, Quark was there for his own purposes. This episode introduced the Jem’Hadar and the Vorta, two types of soldiers working for the Dominion; both species would go on to fight the Federation and their allies during the Dominion War. In another important scene, Quark calls out the hypocrisy and savior tendencies of Starfleet, showing another first-contact perspective of a species that chose not to join the Federation.

This episode was certainly not the Borg’s first contact with the Federation, but it was the first contact for a new star trek hero. In “Scorpion, Part Two”, the fourth season premiere, Janeway and her crew encountered the Borg drone Seven of Nine. Seven was eventually separated from the Collective and taken aboard Traveler, leading her to overcome her Borg implants to become… well, not more human, but to become more herself. Seven, whose story is told in both Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Picardhas become an iconic character in the franchise, and his first contact shows just how far his journey from drone to hero will go.

Archer and his crew are embroiled in a conflict between the Vulcans and their Andorian neighbors in this episode, marking the first time Starfleet has come into contact with the species. Shran, the episode’s main Andorian, was played by hiking mainstay of Jeffrey Combs and would appear several times throughout the series after ending the episode feeling indebted to Archer after the Captain saved his life.

Although “Children of Mars” might seem like an odd choice, given the tragedy of the story, we included it in the list for two reasons. The first is that it takes place on the day of first contact. The second is that Kima and Lil’s story is about reaching out for friendship in dark times. The two girls are at odds with each other, but as they face a terrifying new future, they still hold each other tight. It really encompasses what matters in the concept of first contact.
