Southampton transfer news: New claim emerges after contact made for over £16.2m England star

Southampton are among the favorites to sign Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson and Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl may even adjust his plans in order to complete a deal this month, according to a transfer insider. DeanJones.

Hasenhuttl previously suggested he would look to sign a stopper over the summer, but Jones believes he could look to bolster his options sooner.

What’s the latest on Henderson?

Football Insider has revealed that Southampton investigated signing Henderson from Manchester United before the January transfer window closed.

The report suggests Henderson has been identified as a goalkeeper capable of instantly becoming the Saints’ new number one while also having a potentially lucrative resale value.

Speculation over the 24-year-old’s future came after Manchester United caretaker manager Ralf Rangnick revealed Henderson had asked to leave Old Trafford before the end of the month.

However, the English one-cap man was left frustrated after the German rejected his request and insisted he didn’t want to make any changes to his options between the sticks.

Southampton were quickly installed as bookmakers’ favorites to sign the 6ft2 ace, but they are not believed to be Henderson’s only suitors.

talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook alleged Newcastle United would be keen to acquire Henderson if he was allowed to leave his current employers, while the Manchester Evening News previously suggested Dutch giants Ajax were interested in sealing a loan switch.

What did Dean Jones say about Henderson?

When asked if Southampton would be one of the favorites to sign Henderson if he was able to force a departure from Old Trafford, Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “Definitively.

“I had heard that they were looking to sign a new goalkeeper this summer.

“I have a feeling they might re-evaluate that at this time if the right option presents itself.”

How has Henderson fared so far this season?

Henderson’s wish to leave Manchester United for new horizons should come as no surprise as he has only been granted two senior appearances since the start of the campaign.

That’s despite former England goalkeeper David James suggesting Henderson should have entered the season ahead of David de Gea in the pecking order.

Henderson, who is valued at £16.2million by Transfermarkt, is yet to keep his clean sheet this term.
