Seven tips for saving on glasses and contact lenses

MANY people’s eyesight has deteriorated during lockdown due to time spent using screens.

But that’s okay, the glasses are officially cool – with everyone from model Bella Hadid to Disney’s Encanto princess Mirabel sporting a pair.

PROFESSIONAL BENEFITS: Many employers offer free eye tests, so check before paying for one, and they can also help you pay for a pair of glasses.

FRAME CHANGER: If you love your frames, it may be cheaper to fit new lenses in them.

Specs over specs: Never feel pressured to buy glasses where you had your eye exam. You can request your prescription and order elsewhere. Glasses Direct – which sends trial frames to your home for free – is offering 20% off orders over £50 and 30% off orders over £100. Superdrug Glasses online community is offering 20% off to new customers.

EYE SPY A DEAL: But check out the deals from High Street opticians first. Specsavers has a buy, get one free offer on glasses in its range of £69 or more, and 20% off for over-60s.

UNDER THE LENS: If you prefer contact lenses, store-bought ones are often sold online under different names. For example, Boots Premium Dailies are the same as Biomedics 1 Day Extra. See lenstore.co.uk and visiondirect.co.uk for alternative names.

SEE THE SAVINGS: Do a search on a price comparison site like PriceSpy or Google Shopping to see if lenses are cheaper online. Feel Good Contacts says customers can save £108.88 a year by buying Acuvue Oasys lenses there. Choose well-known and established vendors for security.

REMEMBER: High Street opticians often offer direct debit plans which include eye tests and contact lens follow-up checks. These plans may prove to be more advantageous.
