Newcastle make contact with another England star as well as Maddison

Newcastle United have made contact to sign Harvey Barnes from Leicester City, as well as James Maddison.

The Guardian say Maddison isn’t the only Foxes player of interest to the Magpies as they continue their search for creativity.

Last month it was reported that Leicester wanted £50m to part ways with Barnes but their summer recruitment has been crippled by an inability to move players.

Barnes made his England debut in October 2020, coming on as a second-half substitute in a win over Wales at Wembley.

Brendan Rodgers has Speak clearly his reluctance to sell Maddison amid interest from the North East and it’s hard to see he would be much more willing to lose Barnes.

But the problem for Leicester is that the players they are willing to sell to create funds and space in the squad for newcomers are not generating the interest they were hoping for.

So they may have to consider a big sale of a top player to kick off their summer business with the new Premier League season looming.

They’ve already sold off their top talent for big bucks and smartly reinvested the money, and they might be forced to do the same again here.

Barnes would provide speed and direction from the wing, and could try to make a late push to get into Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad.

He’s still only 24, which means his best years are ahead of him and he’s already a hugely talented and dangerous Premier League striker.
