Manchester United in contact with Inter Milan superstar Lautaro Martinez – Reuters

Since Erik ten Hag took charge of Manchester United, he has managed to fill several holes in the squad with smart acquisitions this summer.

The defense and midfield have been massively improved thanks to the signings of Lisandro Martinez, Christian Eriksen and Casemiro.

One position United have failed to strengthen this summer is that of striker.

United striker search

The summer was dominated by rumors surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure to a Champions League club. In the end, Portuguese agent Jorge Mendes failed to find an exit plan for him.

And that means the 37-year-old has stayed at United and hasn’t had the best of seasons so far. It is clear that Ten Hag would prefer to use Antoine Martial or Marcus Rashford in front instead of the Portuguese international.

Ronaldo has only started in the Premier League once and has only one goal to show for his efforts.

Numerous reports suggest that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner is desperate to leave in January and the Red Devils are aware of the situation.

And now Italian media have suggested the 20-time English league champions have been in contact with Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez’s entourage.

The Gazzetta dello Sport reported that United had just ‘requested first-hand information’ about the Argentina striker’s situation today.

The Argentine striker’s display against Barcelona in the Champions League in midweek has reportedly reignited interest in him among Europe’s elite clubs, with the report saying the 25-year-old is ‘back in fashion’.

Martinez could be the desired option

Not only United but Paris Saint-Germain have also asked about the striker’s current situation with the Nerazzurri. Lionel Messi is said to be an admirer of the striker and PSG could use this to their advantage, especially after reports that Kylian Mbappe could be set to leave.

The report also mentions that Martinez’s agent, Alejandro Camaño, was suddenly inundated with calls and had his work cut out to deal with the increased attention.

However, there were no “decisive calls” or “numbers or offers”, just interested explorations.

Currently, the player valued at 78 million euros per transfer market reportedly informed those around him that his mind was fully focused on his season with the Serie A giants and wanted no distractions.

His contract with Inter lasts until 2026 and there might be a clearer picture after the World Cup ends.

United need to bring in a quality striker given their Ronaldo’s desire to leave and Anthony Martial’s injuries.
