Local residents in contact with family members in Puerto Rico
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Residents of Puerto Rico continue to deal with the cleanup and damaged infrastructure left behind by Hurricane Fiona, which hit the island five years after Hurricane Maria made landfall.
Up to 30 inches of rain fell in Puerto Rico from Hurricane Fiona, causing landslides, destroying homes and roads, and counting. As recently as Tuesday, Puerto Rico’s governor said heavier rains were expected on an island still recovering from Hurricane Maria. 22News spoke to people who have made contact with family members on the island.
“They’re better now, they’ve put their electricity on…they had no electricity. Some of them still have no water but they are fine. They have a cement house, the house is OK. It got flooded, but it’s going down a bit,” said Springfield’s Jorge Colon.
Some people said they had been lucky with family members in parts of the island that hadn’t been hit as hard by Fiona, which hit the southwestern part of the island the hardest. ‘island.
The majority of Puerto Rico’s 1.5 million energy consumers remain without electricity and two days ago 60% were still without water.
