Juventus contact Martial over transfer as Man Utd seek £6m loan fee for runaway striker
Anthony Martial clarified that he wants to leave Manchester United in the winter transfer window, and GOAL can confirm that Juventus have made contact with their representatives.
The France international striker has struggled to earn playing time in the 2021-22 campaign, having made just 10 appearances in all competitions and no action since December 2.
With a fresh start clearly required and United ready to do business if a suitable offer is made, clubs across Europe are considering approaches for the proven 26-year-old.
Will Juventus move?
The Serie A giants have been in contact with Martial’s entourage but have yet to approach United.
After seeing Federico Chiesa ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee ligament injury, the Bianconeri are keen to find reinforcements in attack.
Massimiliano Allegri has instructed his board of directors to deliver him another leader before the next recruitment deadline, with Martial among those he is targeting.
There is, however, a rival interest to consider, with La Liga sides Sevilla and Barcelona are also weighing their options when it comes to a player with 79 goals for United to his name.
What did United have to say?
Caretaker Red Devils boss Ralf Rangnick was once again asked about Martial’s future at a pre-match press conference ahead of United’s Premier League clash with Brentford on Wednesday.
The German had suggested following a 2-2 draw at Aston Villa that the underdog striker had asked to be dropped from his plans for a trip to the West Midlands.
Asked again about this situation and whether Martial could play against the bees, Rangnick said: “I had a conversation with him on Sunday, a personal conversation about what happened and how I considering the whole situation. The matter is now resolved.
“He didn’t train yesterday and the day before yesterday, he will probably train today and after training I will decide whether he is nominated or not. Let’s see what happens then.
GOAL view – Manchester United correspondent Charlotte Duncker
“Martial has made it clear to Rangnick and the board that he wants to leave United this month.
“He has been ruled out of all of United’s Premier League matchday squads since early December following a conversation with Rangnick where he detailed his exit plans.
“GOAL understands that the club are ready to let the French striker go on loan in the next few weeks, but only if a club arrives with the right offer.
“It is understood that United want a club to pay Martial’s full salary, which is over £200,000 a week, and they are also looking for a loan fee of up to £6m.
“It is understood that Sevilla were interested in loaning Martial out for the rest of the campaign, but their offer was turned down as they could only afford to cover half of his salary.
“Rangnick and Martial had a ‘misunderstanding’ over his availability for Villa’s away game last weekend. The German coach wanted to name the French striker on the bench but thought the player refused to be selected, which the French international denies.
“Rangnick says the matter is now resolved but has not confirmed whether he will travel to Brentford for United’s next league game.”
