Johnny Depp avoids eye contact with Amber Heard as she explains his growing acts of violence in court

Actress Amber Heard told jurors in often moving terms of the times Hollywood star Johnny Depp punched her, yelled at her, punched walls and pushed her to the ground. Heard was called to testify on day 14 of the ongoing libel trial, ‘Variety’ reports. Depp sued her for $50 million, alleging she destroyed her career by alluding to her domestic abuse allegations in a 2018 op-ed for The Washington Post.

Heard spoke for about three hours, describing the early years of their relationship. His testimony will continue on Thursday. She told the jury that Depp could be extremely loving, but also extremely jealous and abusive, especially when he was drinking or using drugs.

“I thought he was the love of my life, and he was,” she said. “He was also that other thing – and that other thing was awful.”

Early in her testimony, Heard made it clear she didn’t want to be there, saying the trial had been one of the worst experiences of her life.

“It’s horrible for me to sit here for weeks and go through it all again,” she said.

“It’s the most painful and difficult thing I’ve ever been through.”

She cried on the stand as she tried to explain why she stayed with Depp despite the escalating acts of violence. Depp did not make eye contact with her and looked down or to the side throughout his testimony.

During a May 2013 trip to Hicksville, an upscale trailer park near Joshua Tree, California, she said Depp became paranoid when he saw a woman sitting too close to Heard.

She said Depp grabbed the woman’s wrist, twisted it and said, “Hey man, you think you’re touching my fucking daughter?” According to Heard, he then asked the woman, “Do you know how many pounds of pressure it takes to break a human wrist?”

Later, in their trailer, Heard said that Depp got angry and started breaking things, and accused her of hiding her cocaine.

“He’s like grabbing my breasts, touching my thighs,” she said, as she started to get emotional.

Heard is expected to tell jurors about several other instances of sexual abuse as her testimony continues, including an incident in which she alleges Depp penetrated her with a bottle.

Heard also gave evidence during four days in the UK in 2020, after Depp sued The Sun newspaper for calling him a ‘wife beater’.

The Sun prevailed in that lawsuit, as the judge ruled that Heard’s allegations were “substantially true.”

Depp is looking for a second chance to redeem his reputation.

In his own testimony two weeks ago, Depp maintained that Heard hit him repeatedly and that although he yelled at her during their relationship, he never fought back.

Depp’s lawyers also accused Heard of concocting an “elaborate prank” to benefit his career at the expense of his.

Depp’s lawsuit alleges that Heard’s opinion piece, in which she describes herself as ‘a public figure representing domestic violence,’ cost her her role in the sixth installment of the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ franchise. reportedly grossed $22.5 million.

Heard told the jury that she met Depp when she was cast in “The Rum Diary,” and that they began their relationship during the film’s press tour in late 2011. She said they linked to obscure poetry and literature and that at first a “swirling romance”.

“When I was with Johnny, I felt like the most beautiful person in the world,” she said.

“He made me feel seen. He made me feel like a million bucks.”

But early in the relationship, she said Depp became possessive and controlling. She said she wouldn’t tell him about her auditions and that he made harsh comments when she wore a low-cut dress.

She said sometimes he would have an “outburst” and smash things, throw a glass, knock over a table or hit the wall.

According to ‘Variety’, she also recounted the first time he hit her. She said she was sitting on the couch and asking about a tattoo on her arm.

He said the tattoo said “Wino”. She started laughing, she said, and he slapped her in the face. She laughed again and he slapped her again. Then she said he slapped her a third time and she was on the floor.

“I knew it was wrong and I had to leave him,” she said, getting emotional on the stand. “That’s what broke my heart. I didn’t want to leave him.”

Heard testified that Depp often made baseless accusations of infidelity and defended herself by saying they were false. It would escalate into violence, she said.

“He was pushing me, pushing me down. I was getting up,” she said. “He was pushing me away. Eventually, he was hitting me.”

Sometimes, she said, he held her down and slapped her repeatedly.

Heard also opened up about Depp’s drug use, saying she learned how his personality differed depending on whether he took speed, opiates, Adderall, cocaine or Quaaludes.

She said she particularly disapproved of his drinking and cocaine use, saying he would get violent if drunk or stoned.

She said she was disturbed to realize that no one around Depp seemed to be able to get his behavior under control. She described an incident where he held a small dog out of a car window and ‘howled like an animal’, ‘Variety’ reports.

“Everyone froze,” she said. “Nobody did anything. I too was torn about what to do.”

She said Depp would sometimes pass out and people around him would clean up after him. She said she cleaned up after him once when he lost control of his bowels.

“Nobody told him,” she said. “Nobody was honest with him.”
