Flooded homeowners encouraged to contact Derry council – Derry Daily

Derry City and Strabane District Council said it was continuing to work proactively as part of the multi-agency response to the flooding which occurred in a number of areas of the city and district Saturday night.

As part of this recovery response, the council says it continues to provide all possible support to those affected by the flooding.

In a statement, the council said: ‘We encourage anyone whose home has been affected to contact the Council immediately to register their property in order to benefit from the Department of Communities’ emergency payment scheme, which is currently available to people affected.

“This emergency payment scheme has been made available by the Department of Communities to help those most affected by the floods in the city and district.

“This fund is available to help households by providing up to £1,000 to help make their home fit to live in after inspections by Council staff.

“People whose properties have been affected by flood water can contact the Council on 028 71 253 253 and speak to an Environmental Health Officer who will register the property and arrange for a property inspection and assessment.

“To date, more than 300 national properties are registered and 12 members of the environmental health team have been on site since noon Sunday to carry out inspections and process requests on an urgent basis, with the aim of processing and completing up to to 200 of the applications before the close of business on Tuesday.

“Council teams continue to work closely with relevant agencies as part of this multi-agency response to provide other support, including cleaning teams on the ground assisting with cleanup, providing dumpsters and collection of bulky waste.

“External contractors and community resilience groups have also been mobilized to help with the emergency response.

“The Council continues to participate in regular meetings this week as part of the broader multi-agency response team to address key issues resulting from the flooding.”
