Everton make contact with Barcelona striker Memphis Depay
Everton have been tasked with replacing Richarlison who left for Tottenham Hotspur. The Toffees have been linked with Maxwel Cornet and Armando Broja. Now Everton have made contact with Barcelona striker Memphis Depay who are looking for a new club this summer.
Richarlison was Everton’s top scorer last season with 10 Premier League goals. Replacing him would be a difficult task and Everton are still in the process of signing a player who can succeed the Brazilian. The Merseysiders need a striker who can support Dominic Calvert-Lewin and share the goalscoring load.
Depay is a name that has been loosely circulated in Everton circles. The Dutchman signed for Barcelona last summer on a two-year contract, with an option to extend for the third year. In what has been a rebuilding year for Barcelona, Depay has performed well. It didn’t steal the headlines but it didn’t disappoint either.
This summer, Barcelona signed Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha and even extended Ousmane Dembele’s contract. With the new arrivals and forwards already there, Depay has now been told to find a new club this summer as his contract won’t be extended.
Everton make contact with Barcelona striker Memphis Depay
With a versatile striker like Depay available, clubs across Europe are scrambling to sign the former Manchester United man. According to Spanish publication Sport (via sports witness), Barcelona want to offload Depay as a priority and now want to let him go on a free transfer next summer.
Among the interested clubs is Everton who have approached the 28-year-old. The player’s entourage met the Barcelona hierarchy and it is clear that the club will not offer any extension to the former Lyon striker. From England, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur also approached the player with Everton.
However, the most interested party is Juventus. The 28-year-old likes the idea of playing for the Bianconeri and the two sides are in talks. The Blaugrana won’t have a huge transfer fee request but Juventus will have to offer the Dutchman a competitive salary. The Old Lady wants to grant him a loan but Barca are unlikely to sanction such a deal.
On the other hand, Everton don’t have a realistic chance of landing Depay. Firstly, they cannot compete with Chelsea and Juventus on a monetary level given the weak financial situation. Second, Depay is only willing to leave Barcelona to join a top club that can offer him European football.
Unfortunately, the Toffees are far from offering European football, which probably rules out Everton as an option.
