Contact established: PIF in NUFC talks for £11m ‘specimen’, Howe would like it
An update has emerged on Newcastle United and their pursuit of Alphonse Areola in the summer transfer window…
What is the speech?
According to RMC Sport’s live stream, via The Sun, PIF are in contact with PSG if they try to broker a deal to take the Frenchman ahead of West Ham.
Areola spent the 2021/22 campaign on loan at the Hammers and they reportedly have an £11m option to make him permanent, but the Magpies are now in talks to usurp them.
The Sun add that the club are trying to cash in on Karl Darlow and Freddie Woodman as they look to provide more competition for Martin Dubravka.
Eddie Howe would like it
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe would surely like the French keeper at St. James’ Park next season as he would be a great addition to his goalkeeping unit.
Although he played second fiddle to Lukasz Fabianski in the Premier League, he caught the eye while playing for the Hammers last season.
In the top flight and in the Europa League in the last 365 days he ranks in the 99th percentile for goals conceded and goals conceded vs expected goals after shooting by 90 and it shows that his shot save was among the best in Europe.
He also ranks in the 91st percentile for clean sheet percentage and 95th percentile for save percentage, showing he was exceptional when called upon by David Moyes.
In his Fozcast podcast (5:05) with Jarrod Bowen, former England goalkeeper Ben Foster called Areola “an absolute specimen” in terms of construction. His solid physique may be a factor behind his impressive performances in Europe and indicates he has the build to excel in the Premier League against powerful forwards.
He proved that in the 2020/21 campaign by playing 36 games in the division on loan at Fulham and achieving an excellent SofaScore rating of 6.94 on average. The gem saved 71% of shots against him and kept nine clean sheets as he showed his talent in the English top flight.
Howe would therefore like to have him at Newcastle as he is a proven goalkeeper at the highest level who can come in and push Dubravka for his place. He has shown he can perform in the Europa League and the Premier League and the head coach will know he can trust him to deliver regularly.
AND in other news, NUFC can land their own Foden in exchange for an ‘explosive’ £30m Dynamo he’s ‘dangerous’…
