Chicago’s level of contact with Jim Harbaugh, revealed
The Chicago Bears are in the process of identifying their next head coach, and the franchise is weighing all of its options ahead of what will be considered a crucial hire. Among the handful of candidates tied to the vacancy is University of Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh. According to Hub Arkush, the Bears and Harbaugh “had a phone conversation” regarding the vacant head coaching job, but it doesn’t appear talks have reached an advanced stage.
Arkush, speaking on The rush, indicated that Harbaugh and the Bears have had contact, but Arkush suggests that Harbaugh remains undecided about whether or not he wants to make the jump to the NFL.
“I had contact with Jim,” Arkush said. “I didn’t ask him and he didn’t tell me. But another source who’s usually pretty good told me there was only a brief phone conversation. I’m not going to say it’s between Jim and someone from the organization…I don’t know. I can’t confirm this for sure, but it’s a pretty good source. I think there was a phone call and I think where that phone call ended is that Jim has decisions to make and again he just hasn’t made them.
Based on Arkush’s analysis of the situation, Harbaugh appears to be torn about whether or not leaving Michigan is the right decision. There’s a lot of interest in Harbaugh from NFL teams, but as of now, it appears he hasn’t committed to the Wolverines or the NFL yet.
Harbaugh is also reportedly in talks about a possible extension with Michigan, so there’s a chance he’ll use his NFL interest as leverage to get a better contract. The Michigan boss recently made some changes to the Wolverines coaching staff and has remained active in recruiting, suggesting he thinks there’s still work to be done in Ann Arbor. As for the Bears, they’ll just have to wait and see what Harbaugh ends up doing.
