Chelsea contact club over possible decision to sign 24-year-old midfielder with €45m price tag: Reports
Chelsea have contacted PSV Eindhoven over the signing of midfielder Ibrahim Sangare, according to the Dutch journalist Rik Elrink.
The Ivorian is expected to cost around €45m after agreeing a contract extension at the Philips Arena in early August.
PSV are considering whether to sell Sangare or Cody Gakpo as both players are highly sought after.
Sangare is impressive in defensive midfield and he made 49 appearances last season, scoring four goals and contributing as many assists.
He ranked first in the league in tackles won, first in duels won, second in ball recoveries and third in interceptions.
Chelsea are keen to find a solution to their midfield problem at present, having been outplayed in the middle of the park by the likes of Southampton and Leeds United.
The Blues have reportedly made a bid to sign Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez.
They now appear to be showing an interest in Sangare ahead of the September 1 deadline.
The Ivorian has also attracted interest from Manchester United in the past, although Erik ten Hag’s side have since signed Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro.
Sangare particularly impressed in the KNVB Cup last season, which PSV ended up winning.
He joined Boren from Ligue 1 side Toulouse for £6.3m in 2020 and has been a mainstay in the Philips Arena squad ever since.
The midfielder is dreaming of a move to the Premier League, saying in May (via SportsMole):
“Playing in the Premier League is not just a dream of mine, but every footballer’s dream. It’s the biggest and most important league in the world.”
Chelsea need a defensive midfielder like Sangare
Chelsea have started their season disappointingly and a lot of that is due to poor performances from their midfielders.
Jorginho looked helpless at times, Conor Gallagher was reckless and the England midfielder was shown a red card against Leicester City.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek is a ticking time bomb whose injury troubles make him an unreliable option.
N’Golo Kante is currently out and Mateo Kovacic is back from injury.
With all the signings for Thomas Tuchel’s squad so far this summer, the need for a defensive midfielder hasn’t been addressed.
The Blues are leaving him late but if they can sign a midfielder of the same ilk as Sangare, that bodes well for the rest of the season.
Otherwise, they leave themselves vulnerable in the middle of the park.
