THE Executive Vice President/Director General of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), Babatunde Irukera has pledged to address how lending apps obtain and download customers’ phone contact list .

Irukera who spoke in a Twitter space organized by CIRI on how fintechs are shaming and threatening customers for loan repayments, pointed out that the process was illegal.

Also speaking at the event, Gabs Financial Services Chief Compliance Officer Oyelowo Ayodeji said his organization screens customers before granting them loans.

“Loan disbursement is not the end of the game. It is the easiest because you can easily set up an app to disburse loans. The end game is loan recovery. What is important is your business model for loan recovery. We don’t give loans to everyone and we do our own investigation before giving loans to people. We have a specific target market to grant the loan.

Going further, Ayodeji said his organization does checks to make sure the customer can pay back what they get.

He also added that the company signs a contract with the client and the client’s employer to ensure that the loans are collected.

Last month, digital rights experts criticized the Nigerian federal government for allegedly failing to protect Nigerians from the activities of loan sharks.

A researcher and co-founder of Tech Hive Advisory, Ridwan Oloyede, said the digital lending space had become “a complete mess” as loan sharks managed to blackmail people from low-income households.

A program manager at Global Rights, Moyosoreoluwa Oluwasegun, said the nation had failed to pull itself together “and that’s why these loan apps continue to operate with impunity”.

Oluwasegun said, “The government has announced its decision to remove some of the apps from the Play Store, but what we find is that there are loan apps that the government is not aware of. What we have now is that some of these loan apps are contacting you via Whatsapp due to accessing people’s information, urging you to download the apps and borrow money.

He noted that companies were targeting people at the bottom of the pyramid, whom he described as not having enough to live on.

A ICIR report revealed that this act of public shame clearly violates Article 2.2 of the Nigerian Data Protection Regulation (NDPR), which prohibits unlawful sharing of data with third parties without legal basis.

In the report, CIRI Reviewed the terms of use for some lending apps hosted on the Google Play Store. These included NairaPlus, EasyCredit, TrueNaira, GoCash, CashLion, FairMoney and LCredit.

They all failed to disclose to users downloading the apps that their access rights to users’ contact lists would be shared with third parties in the event of a failure. This was not in line with Google Play Store policies.

Cancer Liaison Program

WhatsApp recently introduced a new feature through an update that changed the way users could view their contact lists in the app. The update introduced two options for the Messaging app’s contact list view – one called “Frequently Contacted” and the other called “Recent Chats.”

As the names describe it, this is exactly how the contact list was split after the updates and the idea behind it was to make it easier for users to access their favorite contacts and most recent conversations. .

While on paper the idea doesn’t sound bad at all, users weren’t happy and many took to Twitter to voice their displeasure. One user called it “awful” while another pointed out that this update made the interface cluttered. Most users added that they didn’t find the Frequent Contacts list useful.

Prior to this update, the WhatsApp contacts page had no such demarcations of frequent or recent chats and all contacts were listed in simple alphabetical order. The reason for the new UI for the contact list was not incorrect, it just made it easier for users to search for people in the old way. The new dual lists added an extra step in the process of accessing contacts, which lengthened the whole process.

Following this, it seems that WhatsApp has decided to return things to the way they were.

As spotted by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp version 2.22.5.9, recently released through the Google Play beta program, brings an update that changes the contact list as it was before. Besides that, the latest update doesn’t add or change much in the app.

This is one of the latest WhatsApp updates and probably the only one that has been rolled back recently. The Meta-owned messaging platform recently added a new voice call interface that displays a rounded rectangular background with the contact’s name, number, profile picture, and call duration at the top. There are also plans to roll out reactions to iMessage-like messages soon.

No to favourites; yes to all contacts

Developers are always working hard to keep their apps feature-rich and engaging, and sometimes that means changing the way they work. WhatsApp recently received an update that introduced a new view for the in-app contacts list with two options: “Frequently contacted” and “Recent chats”. While this was supposed to make it easier for users to find their favorite contacts, user reaction was swift and negative. Now, the Meta-owned platform is revving things up in a new update, much to everyone’s delight.

WhatsApp version 2.22.5.9 was recently rolled out through the Google Play beta program, as shared by WABetaInfo. A disgruntled user called the horrible update, saying they just wanted to see their new contacts in alphabetical order. Another one describes the interface as cluttered, saying they found no use in the frequent contact list. The backlash prompted the developers to revert the change, and users should now be able to access their contact list as before.

Before all this, the contacts page of WhatsApp did not have the frequent or recent chats sections but listed all the contacts in alphabetical order. Although you can see the idea behind the new interface, the old one was much simpler. Also, the new one introduces an extra step that makes the process of accessing contacts even more tedious.

WhatsApp has received many updates since it was bought by Facebook (now Meta) in 2015 and has already received a flurry so far this year. Dr. Amber Gillet

Dr. Amber Gillet is a wildlife veterinarian and in addition to his clinical work, is integral to numerous research projects through the Koala Ecology Group at the University of Queensland, working to improve conservation outcomes for koalas in Queensland and New -South Wales. Doctor Bill Ellis

Doctor Bill Ellis is the founder of the Koala Ecology Group at the University of Queensland, which has been monitoring several colonies of koalas in Queensland for over 15 years. He has undertaken long-term studies of koalas, including focusing on the impact of large infrastructure and development projects on free-ranging koalas and breeding groups. Sometimes it can be the delivery guy wanting a location at your address, and WhatsApp is the easiest way to do that. But you may not want to save every person’s number in such situations.

Luckily, users can chat with a number without saving it by using the click to chat feature of WhatsApp through an internet browser. The click to chat feature uses wa.me shortcut links to start a conversation with any active WhatsApp account.

How to start a WhatsApp conversation without saving a number

1. Open the browser of your choice

2. Visit the address https://wa.me/phonenumber.

To note: Add the registered WhatsApp mobile number you want to chat with in the phone number field in this format https://wa.me/919734652818. The country code, which for India is 91, must also be added.

3. Upon visiting the page, WhatsApp will direct you to a website with a green message button.

4. Click the button to start chatting with the number you entered.

Users can use these steps to message a saved WhatsApp number on Android and iOS devices without having to save the contact to your list.

There are different apps that have been designed to provide the same functionality. WhatsDirect is one such app which can be used to achieve the same goal. The app allows users to enter the phone number they want to start a conversation with, along with a chat message. Users can then hit send, which will redirect them to the main app.
