Active Fit: Contact Lens Care
Licking Memorial Health Systems
Contact lenses are a great alternative to wearing glasses for children who need vision correction. Children can properly and safely care for their contacts with the following tips provided by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration:
- Wash your hands before handling the lenses. Dry your hands thoroughly with a clean, lint-free cloth.
- Clean and disinfect your contact lenses as directed by an eye care professional and use only recommended products and solutions. Please note that cleaning, rinsing and the use of most care solutions are eliminated if daily disposable lenses are prescribed.
- Never expose your contact lenses to any type of water or saliva, which can pick up germs or bacteria.
- Do not wear lenses longer than prescribed. Do not sleep with lenses unless they are prescribed as safe to wear while sleeping.
- Never wear someone else’s lenses.
- When you play sports, wear safety glasses or goggles over your glasses.
- Keep a spare pair of goggles.
- Never put a contact lens in a red eye.
- If your eye is itchy, burning, irritated or red, remove the lenses after washing your hands and call your eye care professional.
Contact lenses should always be prescribed by an eye care professional. Some contacts are replaced daily with a new pair, and others are replaced monthly. Either type of contact may be prescribed depending on the child and their vision. If you have any questions about your child’s vision, contact the treating physician or consult a local ophthalmologist or optometrist.
